Hopefully, mseaterfan will upload Mike's clips from this movie soon. In the meantime, I decided to make a picspam over Mike's role, because it's just so good. Mike's terrific with dramatic roles.

Meet Jason McCartle. He's the oldest of Patsy's sons in this film. We first see him in bed, woken up by his mother who is play wrestling with his younger brother Kevin. The heat's been turned off since Patsy couldn't pay the bill on time. Jason raises the issue, and Patsy tells him to warm up by practicing some basketball before school.

Jason has a love for basketball. But he also has a love for girls. After shooting a few hoops (against his mother), he sees a pretty blond in the distance. She's obviously interested (as is he), and he asks if his mom can cover his newspaper route that evening since he'll be at practice and hooking up with the pretty blond afterwards. She agrees (although she thinks the girl's a little too rich for Jason), and he saunters over to the girl. The girl disappears afterwards for some unknown reason.

Apparently Patsy can't remember her conversations very well. After finishing the paper route, she's furious at Jason for skipping out even though he had given her notice that morning. Jason's confused over her yelling and simply asks "What the hell's the matter with you?" Of course, teenage boys aren't supposed to curse in front of their parents, so this ignites a fight between the two. This will occur a few more times in the film. However, the fight does end when Patsy realizes she forgot their morning conversation. It's also forgotten whenever Kevin has an asthma attack (one of many). The inhaler doesn't work and they end up toting him to the hospital.

Fast forward a few days. Jason learns he has made the basketball team, and due to financial worries, Patsy has agreed to start dealing drugs. Of course, she hides this fact from her kids. When she surprises them with new shoes, she reveals she has a new job. Jason's nosy and starts to ask numerous questions. Patsy stumbles through her words and ends up telling them she's working for a computer company. They seem to buy the story for now. Jason also decides to ditch the orange hat because it hides his beautiful eyes too much. Not really, but the hat disappears.

The day of Jason's first basketball game arrives. He's hoping his mom will attend, but a delivery needs to be made. She apologizes profusely and tells him she'll see him at halftime. This never happens....because she gets high with her customer. Isn't she a great parent?

Jason's tired of the crap. He knows something is up, but he can't quite figure it out yet. He notices his mom is always coming in late, and he's slowly becoming the parent in the household. Even though he's made the basketball team, he's had to miss practices due to babysitting Kevin. Patsy is also becoming more and more distant. She's edgy and ignores Jason's justified complaints. As he leaves the room, he tells her he might as well quit the team. Patsy doesn't listen though because she's craving drugs.

Let's take a moment to savor Mike's cuteness.
OK. After Patsy deals a few drugs, she returns home to apartment to see a note. Jason has rushed Kevin to the hospital again. Afterwards, we see a few scenes of a worried Jason who is anxiously waiting for his mother's arrival. So. Very. Cute. When Patsy finally arrives, she learns that Kevin is stable. However, she can't understand why Jason, a young teenager, wasn't able to fulfill a prescription. As I've said before, Patsy is turning out to be a bad parent. She and Jason argue ... yet again .... and finally meet up with Kevin in his room.

Patsy's relationship with her son is becoming more rocky. Words such as "I love you" at bedtime are gone. Also, Jason is now acting as the father figure for Kevin. Grocery shopping, cooking, laundry, etc.....is all his responsibility now that Patsy is dealing and doing drugs.

The stress of his new responsibilities is starting to take its toll on Jason. He's trying to cook dinner on the few bucks his mom gives him, and to say the least, it's proving to be incredibly difficult. Kevin still sees Jason as a brother, so he does not respect his authority. Jason's annoyed and calls his brother an ass. Patsy comes in and demands to know where her money is. She claims she gave Jason 50 dollars for the groceries yesterday. Jason corrects her and says they received 20 dollars for groceries a week ago. They haven't even seen her in three days! So starts another fight! A small fire interrupts the argument, but Jason's determined to get his mother to see her wrongdoings. I particularly love when he shoves the pot of cooked meat at her and asks if she's hungry. Annoyed, Patsy states they're going out for burgers and says that won't be enough for "Mr. 3-point shooter." If she was around.....she'd realize that Jason has quit the team in order to become the parent.
Patsy = Horrible Parent.

Before they get those tasty hamburgers though, Patsy has to get some more money from her dealership. Jason's curious now. He knows something is clearly wrong, and starts to snoop. As he peeks in the windows, he learns the truth. His mother is a drug dealer. Desperate to keep Kevin safe, they grab a bus ticket for Chicago. (Jason lies and tells the ticket guy his mother will pay for the trip when they arrive.) I'm assuming they have family in Chicago. It's never explained, but let's continue on.

They have no such luck in escaping. Patsy spots them entering the bus and rushes in. Jason's determined to escape her problems, but it only leads to another argument. He calls her a drug dealer, and she denies it. As she says, "I am your mother!" Jason then gives the final blow: "My mother would never lie!" Well, wouldn't you know it. She slaps him! NOBODY is allowed to slap Mike....definitely when he's playing the character of good-hearted Jason. That's just wrong. The slap has now made him scared and he finds it hard to even look his mother in the eye.
Will this change Patsy? Find out in Part 2 which should come sometime later this week.
