The last time we saw Jason McCartle, he was trying to get him and his brother away from their drug-dealing, crystal meth-smoking mother. However, she finds them and has the nerve to slap Jason whenever he reveals her drug secret.
So where does this leave Jason and his brother Kevin?

When they go home, Patsy confesses about her previous drug use and promises to quit. But by this point, she has absolutely no willpower. As soon as she tucks them in, she starts searching for drugs. Her lighter fluid ran out though, so she's digging through cushions for any trace of drugs she might find. It's a pitiful sight. Due to all the noises caused by her rummaging, Jason and Kevin wake up and find her in this state. To say the least, they aren't pleased.

At some point during the night, Patsy passes out. She wakes up to see Jason and Kevin getting ready for school. She stumbles around and says she'll make pancakes. The boys have already eaten and are minutes away from walking out the door. Patsy continues to stumble around though until she hears the front door slam signaling the boys' exit.

As they walk to school, Jason tells Kevin that they can't return home. Their mother's condition is just too much for them to handle anymore. But Patsy just can't leave them alone. She finds them and pulls over begging for them to return. Between her pleas and Kevin's, Jason stops. He still loves his mother, but he hates who she has become. He turns around and asks, "How do we know you mean business?" She tells them to put her in rehab. While this is a nice thought, the money is gone. So she comes up with another solution: lock her up in her room until she's beat the habit.

When they return home, they unexpectedly run into the big drug dealer himself. Patsy tells him she's through dealing, and he informs her that somebody has been stealing from him. Patsy assures him it's not her and that she has the paperwork to prove it. He accepts her claim, but is still full of questions. He believes she knows the people who are stealing. As a scare tactic, he pulls a gun out and threatens to kill Kevin if she doesn't release her knowledge. Patsy tells him she'll let him know of anything she hears. The drug dealer thinks she's legitimate and leaves.

So Patsy starts her "rehab." The boys supply her with food for the day and keep the door locked. In the beginning, Patsy seems OK. However, as the day(s) wear on, she finds it harder to resist the drugs. There are a number of shots in which she becomes restless and starts begging for the boys to release her. She even mumbles (in a babyish voice I might add) that maybe she should see a doctor. Her withering mental state is hard for the boys to handle, but Jason keeps a strong front.
This scene was interesting for one particular reason. As a way to pan from Jason to Kevin, the camera travels down the length of Mike's body. Despite the sadness behind the scene, it's enjoyable from a fan girl point of view. Moving on...

Fast forward a few days, and we see the boys entering Patsy's room again to bring her more food. Jason tells her he has to return back to school. He's been gone since Friday, and if he continues to miss, somebody from the school might come to the apartment. Considering Patsy's condition, that definitely would not be a good idea. Patsy wants to take him to school though.
Remember the blonde from the first post? She returns for this one little scene. Jason is seen talking to her before entering school. I guess she proves to be a nice distraction from the hell he's living in at home, although Patsy is becoming better.

Since Patsy is now clean, she stops by her old friend (and drug dealer)'s house to pick up her son. (Before her "rehab" session, her friend begged her to take care of her son due to the hostility surrounding the house. They had been stealing from the big drug dealer I mentioned earlier.) Let me just say this scene tripped me out. When Patsy enters the house, she finds it vacant downstairs. However, when she enters the upstairs bathroom, she sees her friend and her husband leaned over the bathtub rim with words carved on their backs. (Thief + Thief's Wife) Patsy rushes to look for their son and finds him dead as well. He had been strangled.
Patsy's in a frenzy now and is looking at escaping the city. While parked in front of a railroad crossing, she has both Jason and Kevin hidden. Jason asks where they are going, and Patsy realizes she has nowhere to go. She turns the car around and heads back home afraid.
The boys watch the news and learn about the fate of their mom's old friend. Patsy decides to tell her story to the police in order to help them capture the drug dealer who killed them. After writing down her story, they express their need in her involvement. She starts to talk to the head drug dealer (with a wire of course), and gains a little information for the police. She continues to help them in this case.

While Jason loves his mother, he doesn't fully trust her yet. Her recent behavior has also grabbed his attention. After going to bed, Jason keeps an eye on his mother. When he sees her putting drugs into a hairspray can (her old drug container), he becomes highly suspicious.

Jason is determined to rid Patsy of all the drugs. So with a giant knife in hand, he starts ripping up everything in her bedroom. He tears up the mattress, the pillows, storms through her closet.....everything! When Patsy enters the room, she's shocked to see his behavior. He demands to know where the drugs are and she denies any use. As she tries to calm him down, he throws her on the bed while he raids the closet trying to find the drugs he saw last night. Finally, she pulls him into a hug and tells him to look her in the eye. "I. Don't. Do. Drugs." She promises him that she is clean. Jason expresses his worry and then breaks down into tears.
Movie-wise, this is easily Mike's strongest scene.

Jason and Kevin disappear for the last part of the movie. Patsy continues to help the police in their search for the head drug dealer. At one point, she fears the boys have been kidnapped. This makes her psychotic. She chases the dealer and starts shooting him with her late husband's rifle. She injures his leg and slows him down enough for the cops to arrive.
When the kids arrive with the police, she realizes they were never kidnapped. So there really wasn't a reason for her psychotic behavior. However, it did get the guy arrested.
Anyways, the kids arrive and we see a happy family reunion. (Note: Mike's signature laugh lines) But due to Patsy's involvement with drugs and this case, the family moves away and become part of the Witness Protection Program. Thus, we see the end to this adventure and the movie.
